Police Investigate Apparent Suicide at Northwestern Parking Garage Near Purdue University: West Lafayette, IN – A tragic incident unfolded early Friday morning near Purdue University, as police and first responders began investigating what is believed to be a suicide at the Northwestern Parking Garage, located near campus on Grant Street.
According to Purdue University Police Department (PUPD) Captain Song Kang, a call came in around 8:15 a.m. reporting that a man had hanged himself on the exterior of the parking structure. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene immediately and located the individual hanging from the fourth floor of the garage, visible from the outside on the Grant Street side.
Purdue Police Chief Lesley Wiete confirmed to the Journal & Courier, “We have what we believe is a suicide.” Authorities quickly secured the area and began an on-site investigation, while passersby and members of the university community expressed shock and sorrow over the scene.
The man’s body was removed from the location around 9:50 a.m., approximately 90 minutes after the initial report. An investigator from the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office was present at the scene to assist with identifying the individual and confirming the cause and manner of death. As of the time of publication, the deceased has not been identified, and police have not confirmed whether he had any affiliation with Purdue University.
The Northwestern Parking Garage is a multi-level facility frequently used by students, staff, and campus visitors. Its central location near classrooms and residence halls made the incident highly visible and deeply unsettling for many on campus. Several students walking to class reported seeing emergency vehicles and a large police presence in the area.
University officials have not yet released a public statement regarding the incident, but counseling and mental health resources are expected to be made available to students and faculty affected by the tragedy. Purdue’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office provides support for those experiencing emotional distress, and students are being encouraged to seek help if they are struggling.
While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities are urging the public to be mindful of the signs of mental health crises and to take action when they see someone in distress.
